In our first game against Middlebury College, our strong defense was not enough to hold off Middlebury's steady bats. Although we blasted a few doubles ourselves, we couldn't string enough hits together to get a rally started.

In our second game, we battled DePauw University, maintaining a 1 - 1 tie until DePauw scored late in the game. We went down fighting in the 7th, scoring two more runs.

Throughout the past week we played many challenging opponents, pushing ourselves to play at the top of our game and learn from mistakes. We go into the remainder of our season, continuing to grow and get better everyday.

Tomorrow we head back to Meadville and prepare for more nonconference games against Mount Union and Bethany next week.

Sara Doan '11

Florida - Day Five - Thursday, March 25th

After a last minute schedule change, we took away two solid wins today, stamping out Colby and then Carleton. In the first game versus Colby, Brittany Rung led the Gator defense with nine strikeouts as Katie Wills and Felicia Gowanlock led the offense both going three for four.

Keeping the momentum going, we kept strong, beating Carleton 6-0. Stephanie Fort went the distance on the mound, keeping Carleton's offense ineffective and pitching a shutout. Leading our offense was Katie Wills with two hits (one triple) and Sara Doan with three hits.

Tomorrow is our last day of games, and we are pumped to come away with two more wins to finish off a successful Florida spring training.

Amanda Downey '11

Florida - Day Four - Wednesday, March 24th

After a few long days of cheering, scouting and playing we traded in our gloves for our bathing suits and hit the beach. We started the day on a high note with a lovely breakfast prepared by Helen and the headed off to Daytona Beach for a day of fun in the sun. The fear of sharks in the ocean or the cold, salty water itself that may have kept us from swimming all day but a few brave souls managed to make it waist deep. The pier was filled with shops and restaurants that everyone could enjoy. Many of us learned first hand that throwing a Frisbee is not the same as tossing a softball around. Coach Wardwell and Coach Sanford experienced at least ten dolphin sightings while half of the team learned how to play four square for the first time. With such beautiful weather on Wednesday I'm not sure I could think of a more perfect way to spend our day off.

We returned from the beach and got ready for dinner to hear that Coach Sanford had a surprise in store for us. Thanks to a generous donation from our loyal fan Peggy, we were going to the famous Wolfgang Puck Dining Room for dinner! Many of us experienced some delicious cuisine for the first time such as mouth watering scallops, delicious Duck Napoleon and Wiener schnitzel.

The extravagant meal matched the beautiful atmosphere and wonderful service. We felt very blessed to partake
in such a magnificent dining experience and we are very thankful.

After a beautiful, long and relaxing day we are ready and excited to get back on the field. We each had time to individually reflect and learn from the first half of the week and refocus so we can finish the second half of the week with some good softball games. So look out other teams, the Gators are back from the beach and they're hungry for some wins.

Brittany Rung '13

Florida - Day Three - Tuesday, March 23rd

Today we had a later wake up time again for our games. We all got ready and went over to the coaches house where Helen had made us all a really great brunch. We left for the first of our two games around 11:30.

Our first game was at 1:30. We played Wisconsin-Whitewater, who are a very strong team. They came out very strong and confident but we never lost our focus. Everyone came strong with their bats and were aggressive at the plate and on base. Our defense was equally as strong with great pitching and making plays that held Whitewater when they had runners on base. We ended up winning 4-2 and it was a great confidence booster. It was an amazing team effort and it showed how good we can be, even as a smaller team.

The second game at 3:30 versus Trinity did not go as well. It showed us what it is like to play with a lack of focus and how it can affect the entire game. Though it did not go our way, we cannot dwell on the game and will move on because we know we can be and are better than how we played. It will be a learning experience that we will look back on to always play to our full potential.

After we finished, we went back to the house to quickly get changed for our Friends and Family dinner at the coaches house. Our families came over and everyone grilled and brought delicious food. We had a blast, took a bunch of pictures and had some nice, relaxing down time. Afterward we had a team meeting and went back to our house to chill and go to sleep.

We ended the day on a high note and always look ahead to the next challenge and not live in the past. We can't wait to get back on the field and show everyone what we can do! Go Gators!!

Sophie Katz '13

Florida - Day Two - Monday, March 22nd

We had an early start this morning. Our first game was at 9:30 a.m. against Bowdoin College. The morning did not come easy to us. Bowdoin was a good team and though we played well on defense our bats did not show up. We had a few bright moments, including Maggie's line drive homerun over a very long fence. We lost 4-1 and though this was an "L" we learned as a team to be confident and play our game.

After the not so thrilling first game, we played Univ. Wisconsin-Stout at 11:30 a.m. This game was exciting and definitely thrilling to the end. Stout is a very good team and we were expecting good competition. Stout scored three runs first, but we came back and scored as well. Pitcher Amanda Downey hit her first-ever homerun over the left field fence with a runner on for two RBI. The look of joy and surprise on her face was priceless. This gave us the momentum to take the game.

We were gaining confidence at the plate and on the field. We knew we could stay with Stout. They took the lead in the 6th but in the 7th we rallied back. With two runners on, Freshman Sophie Katz hit a walk-off single to center field to bring home the victory for the Gators. Coach was jumping up and down along with the rest of the team.

This was a huge game and a great battle. The team gained so much confidence and we are excited to continue the momentum into Tuesday. After the games, we were able to spend the rest of the day with our families. Some people went to the parks and others to watch Gator Baseball play. Katie Wills and I had our grandparents with us so we spent the day with them.

We are excited for our games tomorrow and can't wait to show the other teams that we may be small but we are mighty.

Nicole Rodi '13

Florida - Day One - Sunday, March 21st

We arrived to sunny Florida on Saturday afternoon and shortly after our arrival we headed to the practice fields! After a quick practice we were off to eat a delicious meal cooked by Coach Wardwell's Mom, Helen. Helen travels to Florida with us from Maine and provides us with breakfast, dinner and a supportive "mom" feeling.

We were scheduled to play our first games on Sunday. We got to the fields but after about 40 minutes of our warm up it started to down pour!! Our first game against Plymouth State was canceled and our second game, scheduled for 3:30 pm, was pushed to 7:00 p.m. under the lights versus Eastern Connecticut State University.

Eastern Connecticut started the game off strong, scoring two runs, but we came back quickly, getting both of those runs back. Unfortunately, the game ended with a score of 8-2, favoring Eastern. Though the score may not reflect it, it was great for us. We grew a lot from this game; learned a lot from our mistakes and aside from one bad inning, kept up with a team that went deep into the NCAA Regional Tournament last year.

It was a long, wet day but we were able to get a game in and gain valuable experience. We play again tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. We are a small and young team, and we will get over looked and underestimated. The young ladies wearing the Gator uniform this season have worked harder, and longer, have a great deal of talent and potential. As soon as we apply all of these qualities we will be unstoppable!!

I am excited to see where we go and finish out the trip!

Felicia Gowanlock '12

Gators Participate in the First Annual Student-Athlete Talent Show

Here at Allegheny, and at all NCAA affiliated institutions, we have what is known as SAAC, Student Athletic Advisory Committee. This committee consists of representatives from each sports team. The committee meets twice a month and discusses topics such as how to increase attendance at games, how to sufficiently use economic resources when traveling to and from games, and other various hot topics.

One aspect of SAAC is the public relations committee. This year our PR committee decided to put on an All Athlete Talent Show. Basically players from each team make up their own act and perform it at the show. Though the amount of teams that participated was a little low, the teams that did come out to perform did a really great job!

The show opened with the Men’s Track team; they serenaded their coach with the song “my girl” and then showed us that real men can wear short shorts. Next it was our turn, we decided to bring out our inner hood and perform our very own rap! Coach Sanford even put on her baggy pants and hoodie and made a special guest appearance!
The Tennis team did a movie montage to Austin powers, The Hangover, Step Brothers, A Night at the Roxbury and Napoleon Dynamite.

The Women’s soccer team gave a stunning performance of the Chicken Noodle Soup dance in a wide variety of costumes. Men’s soccer team showed off their sex appeal by dressing classy and dancing seductively. The Golf team danced for us and showed us they can not only handle clubs but umbrellas! Baseball did a hilarious little reenactment of an old spice commercial, and the Football team ended the show with a Chippendale’s tryout and a few songs.

After calculating the scores the first place trophy went to the Golf team. The show was a big success and the members of SAAC who put it together did a really great job! We hope for a bigger turn out and an even better show next year! There is even talk about potentially charging admission for the show and donating the proceeds to a worthy cause, but the specific details of next year still need to be worked out.

Over all the process of meeting with our team and coming up with an act was a lot of fun and really helped to bond our team even more! Though I am disappointed we did not take home first place in the talent show I know that we are focused and ready to take home a more important first place trophy this season!

P.S. here is the rap we performed if you are interested in reading

TEAM
Softball team is in the house
We’re gonna show you what we’re all about
Team of eleven with so much skill
Winning conference title? The end of our regular season and we had great weather for playing softball - 87 degrees in Meadville- many would find that hard to believe. We finished up our regular season this past weekend with two home conference games against Kenyon on Saturday followed by a picnic with our families and friends. It was a nice way to unwind and let everyone know how grateful we are for all their support. Our parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends make it easy for us to give everything we have, knowing they are supporting us. The picnic is also to celebrate our seniors. They are beginning a new journey and we wish them well in all they pursue. Liz you have been my right hand support in the outfield for two years and Rachel, this year I have gotten to work beside you in the infield, it was awesome. I will personally miss you both so much.

We ended our regular season with an overall record of 22-16 and a conference record of 9-5.We have again qualified for the conference tournament scheduled to be played at Dennison this weekend. We have worked extremely hard to get to this point. This is the busiest time for all of us, with finishing up classes, getting ready for finals, and preparing for the NCAC tournament.

One thing is certain, we stick together and it helps to all be in the same position. We will support one another and we will pull together to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Those of us who have experienced this for the third or fourth time will be there to help the girls experiencing this for the first time. It is where we all want to be and it means working harder now than we did the entire season, but in the end we will get it done.

Thank you to all who have been at the games and who have sent their well wishes to our team through the season. We hope we have made you proud. GO GATORS! Katie Wills, Junior

Stacey Robertshaw- Player Profile

Name: Stacey Robertshaw

Year: Freshman

Position: Pitcher

Uniform Number: 12

Major: Neuroscience/ Psychology

Minor: Spanish

What made you choose Allegheny College: I liked that Allegheny pushes students to branch out, take any classes they are interested in, and do all kinds of activities.

Favorite part of Gator Softball: The team has such a great bond, and it definitely made the transition into college a lot easier.

Favorite class taken at Allegheny: Abnormal Psychology was my favorite class because it was interesting to learn about all the various disorders, and the professor had plenty of stories from his experiences to share.

Favorite place on campus: I love going to McKinley’s with my friends. It is very interesting and fun.

Favorite place on campus: My favorite place on campus is dead center of the big glass structures by the Tippie alumni center, because when you stand in the middle and make a noise it echoes but no one else can hear it but you!

What activities are you involved with outside of softball: I volunteer occasionally for the Autism Outreach Center.

Favorite movies/TV shows/books: I love the movie The Whole Nine Yards, and my favorite TV show is Boy Meets World. We were able to get a few practices in outside on our own field and it felt great!

We opened up regular season play yesterday at Mount Union. We came out really strong and ended up beating them both games 4-1 and 11-9, despite some pretty muddy conditions and a small rain delay. Bessie hit another home run, over the right field fence I might add :). Our bats were amazing during both games. Marci went 7-9 on the day and she tied an Allegheny single-game record by banging in six RBIs in the second game. Maggie finished 6-9 on the day and Rachel 4-7. This was a really exciting day for all of us, because we haven't beat Mount Union since I've been here (a long 4 years) and Coach Sanford informed us after the game that it was her first time beating the team as well.

The team was very pumped to carry our energy in to today's games at Grove City, but a typical random snow in the area caused the games to be cancelled, which means we'll be spending another evening practicing on the blue courts.

Today is also the day that senior comps are due. I am very excited and nervous at the same time to be done with the biggest thing I've ever had to do at this school; it is a bit overwhelming and I'm sure Rachel can attest to that as well.

Despite the small weather set back, the season is in full swing and weare very excited to continue playing this week with games against Oberlin and OWU. - Liz Burr, Senior

Thoughts From Our Leaders- Maggie Bodenlos

After a final Florida tournament record of 5-5 with two wins our final day, we are eager to start our game-playing back here in the Northern dirt. As hard as we have worked and as much fun as we have had the past week, we are ready to get back into practices in preparation for our upcoming games. We were off to get a good rest from our busy week from Saturday through Monday and are excited to get back out there for two days of practice before our next two matches against Grove City this upcoming Thursday. After two competitions with Grove City we will back to practice until Sunday where we travel to Mount Union to face them in two games.

Since arriving in Meadville either Saturday or Sunday, we are all missing the Florida sun and warmth. Bessie Artino’s grand slam followed by Rachel Ryan’s two run homerun cut the 7-0 deficit to 7-6. Despite our battle and “never die” attitude and enthusiasm that filled the dug out, the final score ended up being 7-6, Trinity. Though the games did not go as well as we all had hoped there were some bright spots in the midst of the lows we had today. Marci Potuzko, Sara Doan, and Becca Burns all took one for the team, wore a pitch and got a free base. Rachel Ryan went 2-4 with two RBI’s and a homerun in the second game. Bessie Artino, in the second game went 3-4 with four RBI’s and a grand slam. One a side note Coach Wardwell continues to get increasingly better, with her movement and mobility on her crutches and in her wheel chair throughout the complex.

With the games today being at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM the rest of the day was left open for those players to spend time with the family members that came to see them. There are many parents and family members who travel to Florida and many of our other games. They are a great support system and cheering section for our team. The parents often become very close to one another much like how our team is.

The players referred to as the “orphans” (the ones who had no family to go with) spent the day bonding, lounging and yes studying… we do attend Allegheny.

In the van ride to and from our destinations we often play this word association game. You think of a string of words that all relate to one another. You then tell everyone the first and last word; it is then their job to think of the words in between the first and last word that relate them all together. For example will: mate. Will power, power house, house mate.

So I end my blog with this riddle: heat: stick (2 words in between)- Felicia Gowanlock, Freshman

Spring Break- Day Five

Today was our day off! Then we headed off to the fields for our first game which was at 11:00 against Endicott. Endicott crossed the plate first to make the score 1-0 but we fought back to tie it up at 1-1, which put us into extra innings. Endicott scored two runs in the top of the eighth. In our half of the inning Liz Burr started at second base for the international tie breaker rule. She moved to third base on a pitch hit single by Amanda Downey, so with runners on first and third it was my turn up to bat. I got the suicide squeeze sign and laid down a bunt between the pitcher and first basemen which Liz scored easily. With the score 3-2, Amanda on second and myself on first Maggie Bodenlos stepped up to the plate. She put her aggressive and powerful hitting skills to the test when she ended the game with a three run homerun, giving the Gators the win with a score of 5-3.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o />We then took our lunch break and refueled ourselves with another pump-up jam session in the vans with the AC blasting. We then came back out to face <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Anderson for the 3:00 game. 8-4.

We then took off to go scout Kean for preparation for a later contest. Finally, it was time to head back to our houses to hurry up and clean up for our family and friends dinner. Although there was a competition over the showers and some of us having to rinse off in the pool. We were served a delicious variety of homemade dishes. This was a great time for everyone to mingle, while eating the delicious food. After taking many pictures to create memories, we headed back to our separate houses to finally relax after a very long and warm day. We can’t wait to get back on the field and come out with two solid games tomorrow! - Allison Piper, Freshman
<p class="MsoNormal" style="FONT-FAMILY: times new roman; We came out strong in the second game and battled against Millikin, defeating them 3-2, really showing our Gator pride. A few underclassmen really had a day today with Bessie Artino helping the offense with some clutch hits and Stacey Robertshaw pitching a fantastic second game.

After the games it was back home for Sunday dinner, and we all ate our fill of Helen’s cooking. Dinner, however, was briefly interrupted to watch the shuttle launch. We all piled outside to watch Discovery take off and it was a really cool thing to see. All in all, we are going apply the aloe and look for two W’s tomorrow.- Marci Potuzko, Sophomore

Below are pictures from the space shuttle launch:

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313617003005044946" style="DISPLAY: block; this morning to begin traveling to Florida for our Spring Break trip. Our flight left Pittsburgh at about 9:30 AM and we were all excited to leave the cold behind. Most of the girls on the team have flown before, but Bessie was really nervous about it. We had to try to distract her during take off and landing, however she did much better than I thought she would. Once we arrived in Orlando everyone was anxious to get outside and feel the warmth that we haven't experienced in Meadville in a very long time. Before even leaving the airport everyone was already down to their shorts and practice T-shirts. We ate lunch at the airport and then packed up the vans to head to practice.

It was so nice to be out on grass and dirt again after having to return to the blue courts following the Virginia Beach/Maryland trip. After practice we drove to the complex to scout some games. We ended up watching a small bit of W&J and then watched most of the Hiram/Hope game. It was good to see these teams down here and get a feel for what they are like, because we play W&J and Hiram in the regular season and will be seeing Hope later this week. Being at the games made us all kind of antsy to get out and play
ourselves.

We arrived at our houses at about 6:30 PM. All the girls are staying in one big house and the coaches stay in another right next door. We have stayed in these houses since my freshman year and I think it is a much better choice than a hotel. We are able to swim in the pools attached to our homes, have a lot of down time and hang out with each other, and eat amazing food prepared by Coach Wardwell's mom, Helen.

After a tiring day of travel and unpacking we are all ready to get some sleep and head out to the fields tomorrow to open up a great week of softball- Liz Burr, Senior<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Below is a picture of the team on the way to the Pittsburgh Airport at 6:00 AM:

Va. We were excited to find out our rooms overlooked the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. After a quick meeting to discuss the itinerary for the following day it was time for lights out in preparation for opening day.

Friday, March 6th – Opening Day
We woke to a sunny, yet very windy day today. A two hour delay allowed the team to take in breakfast and some time to walk the beach and enjoy the sunshine.

Game one would be a tough one for us. Lynchburg, a 2008 College World Series participant and the preseason #8 team in the country, lived up to their billing. The Gators were able to hold them off for a few innings before their bats awoke and took eight runs. With some sporadic hits we were never able to string anything together and took the loss 8-0.

Game two would not be any easier as they faced perennial national powerhouse Salisbury under the lights in the night cap. Though the Gators were able to keep the score within two early on, the Gulls strung together some hits to make the final 11-2. It was certainly a tough way to start the 2009 campaign but a learning experience, none the less.

Below are some pictures from the first day of competition:

Saturday, March 7th
The Gators came out determined to even our record to 2-2 on the year and did just that. The bats which had been quiet the previous day showed up on Saturday.

In game one versus Stevenson, Junior Maggie Bodenlos started the morning off with a bang by hitting a lead off home run to dead center (the first of her career). Senior, Rachel Ryan followed Maggie’s lead by hitting a deep home run to left a few innings later. Sophomore, Amanda Downey held Stevenson to only one run as the Gators unloaded 13 runs to take the victory.

Freshman, Stacey Robertshaw took the mound in her first career start for the Gators in game two versus Polytechnic University. She got all the runs she needed in the first inning as she recorded a shut out for Allegheny. Once again, the bats showed up with stellar performances by Sophomore Sarah Doan, Rachel Ryan, and Maggie Bodenlos. We evened up our record for the tournament with a final score of 7-0.

Tonight we travel to Frederick, MD for a Sunday double header with Hood College.

Sunday, March 8th
After a 2-2 showing at the Beach Blast Tournament in Virginia Beach, the Gators traveled up to Frederick, MD for a double header aganist Hood College.

In game one the Gators fell to Hood College 5-4 in extra innings. The Gators bats stayed alive from the previous day slugging ten hits. Maggie Bodenlos led the Gators offense with 3 hits.

In game two the Gators came back from the loss and earned a 5-1 victory. Rachely Ryan hit her second homerun in as many days, and Bessie Artino went 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Stacey Robertshaw got her second win of the weekend pitching seven innings and only giving up five hits and no earned runs.

The Gators return to Meadville, PA with a weekend of playing under their belts. One more week of practice before heading down to Florida for Spring Break.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://alleghenysoftball.blogspot.com/2009/03/va-wesleyan-beach-blast-tournament.html' title='Va. This coming weekend we travel to Virginia and Maryland to play six games. We are all pumped because this means we get to see other teams and we get to play in the dirt. It is always interesting the first time we get outside for a game, and is a great opportunity for us because it is our first chance to see how we compare to other teams. It lets us see where we stand on our play, focus, and execution, and it allows us to see what we need to work on before Florida.

We leave Thursday afternoon for a long drive, hoping to leave the snow behind and enter a much warmer state. In the past years, this has usually been true. The drive home, however, usually is depressing because we get a small glimpse of the dirt, and then we are back inside for another week.

Because we have only had one opportunity to be outside--and that was on our turf football field, it will be so wonderful to be breathing fresh air while playing, and having the sun shine on our faces. The transition from inside to outside has many challenges – from the ball bouncing differently, dealing with the sun in our eyes, and the fact the wind can either create or destroy a hit. Since those are all factors that are part of the game, they are things we are all looking forward to, because we love the game and this game is what we live for!!- Rachel Ryan, Senior

Bessie Artino- Player Profile

Name: Bessie Artino

Year: Freshman

Position: C/1st

Uniform Number: 24

Major: Pre-Veterinary Medicine

Minor: Religious Studies

What made you choose Allegheny College: The environment and atmosphere was so welcoming, and this is a great academic school.

Favorite part of Gator Softball: The family we have made, and being able to play college softball.

Favorite class taken at Allegheny: My Freshman Seminar class, Animals in Art and Life. It seems like we had just started; yet, there are only three weeks until we are on the road to our Virginia Beach Blast Weekend Tournament where we face four challenging match-ups against Lynchburg, Salisbury, Stevenson, and Polytechnic Institute of New York. We did find a few days last week where the weather was warm enough to get outside for practice, but we are anxious to actually get on the field and start playing some ball. After last week’s late night practices, we have officially practiced at each time slot, from the beloved 5:30 am to the late 8:30-10:30 pm.

Practice continues to be challenging both mentally and physically where fifteen girls get together and put everything out there for a part of each day. As class assignments begin to pile up, we must remain focused and hard at work each day. These next few weeks and the work we put in are what will allow us to have a strong season. We are excited to put all of our dedication and commitment towards this upcoming season.

We have just had our last full weekend off to relax our bodies and will jump right back into our daily work outs. Only three short weeks until we start up, Virginia for the weekend and then off to the Florida sun for an exciting ten game week at the Rebel Spring Games. Soon enough the Allegheny Gators will be back on the field, and we are eager to get started!- Maggie Bodenlos, Junior

Player Profile- Liz Burr

Name: Elizabeth Burr

Year: Senior

Position: OF

Uniform Number: 11

Major: Biology

Minor: Psychology

What made you choose Allegheny College: I visited the college in the fall, which is the most beautiful time to see the campus. We are all so excited to finally be fielding, throwing, and hitting that we sometimes forget that all of this is happening on the blue courts!! We have come to stand by the motto: regardless if we are practicing on the blue courts or playing at Robertson we give everything we have leaving nothing on the FIELD.

The semester is already moving at a fast pace and the papers and exams are following quickly behind. This is the time when it is so great to have softball because it gives us at least two hours a day where we can clear our minds of this week’s Bio and concentrate on the thing that we all love. We have four and a half weeks of practice until we head to Virginia to compete in the Beach Blast Tournament and then the following week it’s on to Florida to play in the Rebel Spring Games.

As fast as this semester is going, I know that before we know it the next four and a half weeks will be over and we will be outside playing. I can’t wait for the quality bonding time on the plane ride or in the fifteen passenger vans. But most of all I am anxious to get outside on the field and show our opponents our HEART, HUSTLE, and LOVE for the GAME!!!- Katie Wills- Junior

Hitting and Defensive Clinics

The Allegheny College softball program will host back-to-back clinics for girls ages 10 through 18 at the David V. Classes started last Wednesday and practice starts next Monday. We are all excited for the transition from conditioning/lifting to practice and improving for the season ahead. It is a very exciting time, after the short fall season and the hard work we put in this winter, to get back to ball and start to mold as team. Although practicing indoor is not as exciting as getting dirty, it is still softball and still thrilling!!

As usual, at the beginning of semesters, there is more free time and less worries. However, as time goes on, that never lasts. That is why softball is such a great time for us; it allows us all to get away from our books and be able to do something that we have loved since we were young. It lets us relax, have fun, and compete which is something that has helped shape who we are today. There is practically nothing I would rather be doing than playing softball.

So, as time draws closer and closer to season starting, I get more and more excited for practices, games, and team bonding. Unfortunately, there is almost three feet of snow on the ground, so practices will be indoors, and the early morning walks will be treacherous, but things like that make it that much more exciting when we do get outside in the sun and dirt!!!!- Rachel Ryan, Senior

Player Profile- Marci Potuzko

Name: Marci Potuzko

Year: Sophomore

Position: Catcher

Uniform Number: 5

Major: Biochemistry

Minor: Economics

What made you choose Allegheny College: During one of my visits I was walking around while students were walking between classes and I felt like I would fit in here. At some other schools when I was surrounded by students I felt out of place, but here I felt at home.

Favorite part of Gator Softball: The team. We say it a lot, but we really are a family, and I love spending so much time with everyone. The trip to Florida is a great week as well, and we all have a great time playing ball and hanging out with each other.

Favorite class taken at Allegheny: Comm Arts 135: Modes of Film and Video Production. I love watching movies, and the class was all about movies: history of them, how you make them, how to analyze them, everything. It was awesome to go to class and watch movie clips all the time.

Favorite place on campus: I don’t really have a favorite place on campus, I guess if I had to choose I’d say the Game Room or the softball field.

What activities are you involved with outside of softball: SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee)

Player Profile- Maggie Bodenlos

Name: Maggie Bodenlos

Year: Junior

Position: 3rd Base

Uniform Number: 6

Major: Psychology

Minor: Women's Studies

What made you choose Allegheny College: Interestingly enough, I was not even going to apply to Allegheny because my sister (Abby Bodenlos ’08) was already a student at Allegheny and I wanted to do my own thing. I applied to ten different schools and was not even sure what I was looking for in a college. After considering all of my options, I finally realized I wanted a small school where I could find a close group of friends and be a part of small classrooms. Choosing Allegheny and deciding to play softball could not have been a better decision for me.

Favorite part of Gator Softball: The fact that every single girl on the team is unique and different from one another, but we all come together with a common love for the game of softball. Our bond, because of all of our hard work, is truly unbreakable. Knowing that our group is in it together through it all and for each other is something that could never be replaced.

Favorite class taken at Allegheny: My favorite class so far was Abnormal Psychology- it was my first Psychology class and made me interested in Psychology for my major.

Favorite place on campus: I lived in Brooks hall both freshman and sophomore year and have spent so much time walking to classes and practices on Brooks Walk. Thanksgiving gives them little reprieve from the inevitability of finals. There is one semester ending event, however that has become a welcomed tradition - a time to gather together, share a family style meal, and reflect on the spirit of the holiday season - the team holiday party. Held annually in the beautifully restored Tippie Alumni Center, the players enjoy a meal cooked by their coaches, participate in a secret gift exchange, and decorate sugar cookies.

2009 Gator Softball Team

Team picture before dinnerDecorating sugar cookies!

Thoughts From Our Leaders- Liz Burr

We are now halfway through our winter break, and I would have to say this is one of the toughest times of our season. We do individual workouts to keep up with the fitness we acquired while conditioning as a team in the fall. The tough part is being able to motivate yourself when you are alone. You don't have teammates expecting you to show up and run, or pushing you when you start to get tired. This part of the season helps to build character and really shows what kind of player you have become. Also, when you return to campus and start working out with the team, everyone will be able to tell and appreciate how much you have worked (especially if you can pass your fitness tests so they will not have to wake up at 5:30 am and run with you).

I am returning to campus early this year for the first time I've been at Allegheny. I am back at school now, about two weeks before classes start in order to try and finish up my senior comprehensive project before the spring softball season begins. It is not always necessary to return to campus early for your comp, but I have taken it upon myself to do so. This way I will not be completely overwhelmed and stressed come game time. My complete project is due following our second game of the season, which will be here before I even know it.

I'm looking forward to practice and doing softball things, since we have been working so hard running and lifting all winter.
